Baltimore Cocktail Week hits the city

Baltimore-based mixologist and curator Ginny Lawhorn, and Frederick Wildman Spirits will present the first annualBaltimore Cocktail Week from March 22-29.

The week-long event features programs and educational forums that focus not only on the craft of bartending, but on the health and wellness of those who work in the service and hospitality industries. Tickets are $15- $35.

Baltimore Cocktail Week will offer a series of programs and classes on wellness and restoration, money management for cash-based incomes, master craft classes and trade-show style mini-tastings designed specifically for Baltimore’s service community, as well as contests that highlight the talented and creative bartenders in Baltimore and the surrounding areas.

Participating bars and restaurants will have Frederick Wildman signature cocktails available to the public. With each purchase, a $1 donation will be made to charitable organizations chosen by the participants. The highest donating participant will have the donation matched by Baltimore Cocktail Week.

The public is invited to attend the Cocktail Contest and Launch Party on March 22 at 6 p.m. at Pen & Quill, which will feature some of Baltimore’s most innovative bartenders who will compete to create the ultimate signature cocktail using Frederick Wildman Spirits as their base,

On March 24 at 6 p.m., Baltimore Cocktail Week will present a Sip & Screen Tradeshow Movie screening, as four craft spirit suppliers will host a mini tradeshow-style tasting and cocktail hour followed by a screening of the movie Chef. Lite fare will be provided, with 20 percent of the proceeds being donated to Ride for the Feast.

Monday, March 23

Money Management and Financial Health

When: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Tickets: $20

On tap: A licensed councilor and self-employment consultant will discuss strategies for wise money management and long-term financial planning for cash-based incomes. The course will feature strategies for balancing income fluctuation as well as implementing structured savings. Breakfast and cocktails will be provided.

Balvenie Master Craft Class 

Where: Penn & Quill

Address: 1701 North Charles Street, Baltimore

When: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets: $20  (Open only to service industry professionals)

On tap: National Balvenie Brand Ambassador David Laird will provide a whisky 101 introduction followed by a discussion of the history of Balvenie. This conversation will be followed by profile tastings of four Balvenie marks (12, 14, 17, & 21). Lite fare and a welcome cocktail will also be provided.

Sip & Screen Tradeshow with movie Chef

Wellness & Restoration

On tap: A wellness seminar focused on sustaining health against the strain of long shifts, late nights and heavy lifting. A nutritionist will discuss supplements for stamina and recovery. This discussion will be followed by a restorative yoga class specifically designed for those who stand for a living. There will be a mix and mingle post-class reception.

Thursday, March 26

Tasting the Terroir of Coffee and Tea

Where: Dooby’s Coffee

Address: 802 N. Charles St., Baltimore

Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Tickets: $15

On tap: This cupping class will feature three coffees and three teas from a different country, and will give a brief explanation on tasting coffee and tea, the origin of the featured coffees and teas, as well as how they are grown. The conversation will explore the “terroir” of coffee and tea, different notes based on geographic origin, climate, and elevation of the producers. By the end of the class, attendees will be able to explore the differences in profiles and characteristics, similar to wine bodies.

Getting Friendly, a Happy Hour and Hospitality Exploration

On tap: Lindsay Difabbio of the Foreman Wolf Group will explore the difference between service and hospitality. From conversation options that exclude the weather and traffic to remembering your guest’s “usual” to anticipating their preferences.  Members from all aspects of the hospitality industry are welcome to join this exchange and share their unique perspectives.
