More Male Nurses in Maryland

There is a chronic shortage of nurses around the country, and it puts a strain on those working longer hours under stressful conditions. It’s a great time to recruit new people to enter the field, including male nurses. However, there is work to be done to that end. A stigma is often attached to male nurses that keeps many from pursuing this field. Unifying policies are needed to make them feel welcome and to erase the misconceptions of what it means to be a male nurse.

Growth Expected in the Field

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Registered Nursing (RN) is expected to grow by 15 percent through 2026.  Growth will occur for various reasons, including a focus on preventive care, increases in chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity and the aging of baby boomers needing healthcare.

Men Can Bridge the Gap in the Nursing Shortage

In a recent article in the Huffington Post, the Dean of Johns Hopkins University’s School of Nursing stated that more male nurses are needed, but she also felt that the sexes needed to be considered equal across the field to eliminate gender bias.

The  AACN stated that there’s been a steady increase in baccalaureate programs in nursing in 2016. However, the shortfall is so urgent more are needed as researchers and caregivers.

Science Daily released findings from a new study showing 40 percent of RNs are over 50. As older nurses retire, the shortfall in the number nurses grows bigger.
