Archipelago Tiki Bar & Generation Axe Concert – Washington, DC
On Sunday, 4/24/2016, Newmeyer and I trekked to DC from Baltimore to see the Generation Axe Tour at the historic Warner Theater. The show featured five guitarists (in the order they appeared): Tosin Abasi, Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai. Excellent concert, even though Zakk Wylde seemed a bit out of place (there were a ton of Black Label Society shirts and vests in the audience, so I imagine there was a valid financial, if not artistic, reason for him being there).
Before the show we hit DC’s newest (and only) tiki bar: Archipelago. I had an Oil Can Boyd (olive oil infused blackstrap rum and falernum), and Newmeyer had a Drowsy Gator and a Mai Tai. All of the drinks were great. I also had a tofu sandwich, and Newmeyer had deviled eggs and meatballs. All in all, this is a cool place with above-average food and drinks, but definitely not worth the trip from Baltimore unless you’re in DC for some other reason. Why Baltimore doesn’t have a tiki bar, decent or otherwise, is beyond my comprehension….
