7 Reasons Why You Are Not Losing Weight

It’s common for many people to begin a new fitness plan, filled with enthusiasm, motivation, and ideas of what it could bring.

However, the newfound enthusiasms are often replaced with dread, disappointment, and discouragement soon after.

The motivation sinks, the gym card gets used less and less, and people find themselves right where they started just weeks earlier.

Here are the seven most common reasons as to why that happens:

1. Lack of a Clear Goal

Many people get into fitness with generic goals like, “I want to lose weight.”

It’s not a bad thing to achieve, but it’s incredibly vague. It would help if you had clear goals of what you want to accomplish with your fitness plan.

Rather than say, “I want to lose weight.” make it actionable:

“I want to lose 5 pounds of scale weight within 30 days.”

It’s actionable, clear, time-bound, realistic, and measurable. You are much more likely to follow through because you’ll have a much better idea of what you want to achieve.

2. Trying to Do Too Much, Too Early

For many, fitness is like a switch. They turn it on and become incredibly dedicated. They cut out all of the unhealthy food and replace it with whole, nutritious alternatives. They begin hitting the gym five to six times per week. They wake up at 6 am to drink a shake of raw eggs.

You get the idea.

Sure, those things can work. However, when you try to do too much from the start, you’ll burn yourself out and give up soon after.

Rather than see how big of a change you can make in an instant, dedicate yourself to something sustainable.

Start with two or three workouts, make healthy food choices here and there, and try to get to bed a bit earlier. Over time, you can scale your efforts up. However, do so gradually. Don’t go from zero to a hundred in a day.

3. No Plan of Action

Much like you need clarity with your goals, you also need it with your actions. If you get to the gym and wonder what you should do every time, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Draw up a concrete training plan (or hire a personal trainer to help you with it), know exactly what you’ll do every time, show up and execute step-by-step.

4. Having Unrealistic Expectations

Many beginners don’t know what to expect from working out and almost always have a vision in their heads of the fantastic results to be had.

However, significant results come slowly. It takes months, even years to transform your body.

The disconnect between expectations and reality often frustrates beginners, and they end up quitting after only a few weeks of eating well and exercising regularly.

5. Limiting Beliefs

“I have a slow metabolism.”

“I have bad genetics.”

“I’ll just always be out of shape.”

The fact is, these beliefs are often inaccurate, and most people are more than capable of achieving a fantastic physique. However, if you go into fitness with a negative mindset, you’ve failed before you’ve begun.

6. Not Having a Personal Trainer

Many beginners try to figure it all out alone. But there are a lot of moving parts and putting all the pieces together can be very frustrating. It takes most people years before they get the hang of it, and many folks give up way before then.

However, whether you hit up the local gym or prefer to train at home (yes, in-home personal trainers are a thing and are worth it), asking for help is one of the best ways to accelerate your results.

An experienced personal trainer will teach you everything you need to know to get started and make some great results.

7. It’s Not Fun and Engaging

Yeah, yeah. I know. “No pain, no gain.” and all that.

Yes, pushing yourself is important, but your fitness plan also needs to be fun and engaging. Otherwise, you’ll follow it for a while, and once the motivation of novelty fades, you’ll quit.

We’ve fallen into the mindset that fitness should be daunting. The fact is, there are plenty of ways to get fit, and you need to find what makes it interesting for you. Even within the activity of lifting weights, there are dozens of ways to program your training – each different from the last.

The single best predictor of your fitness success is the amount of enthusiasm you have for your next workout. If you dread having to train, it’s a good idea to try something new.
