The fibrous material was previously prized for its durability as well as thermal properties, and was extensively incorporated into insulation, pipes, boilers, machinery, and other components aboard vessels. Yet what made the material so versatile also made it dangerous: inhaling its microscopic fibers can lead to lung cancer up to 30 years later.

This month, Baltimore and all of America celebrate National Military Appreciation Month, honoring the service and sacrifices of current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over 21,000 people served in the military in Baltimore, while Maryland currently has close to 40,000 active staff members serving across the U.S. Military branches.
