Sen. Kamala Harris announces 2020 presidential bid

WASHINGTON – Sen. Kamala Harris is running for president, the California Democrat announced in a campaign video posted to Twitter on Monday.

“The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values,” Harris said in the video. “That’s why I’m running for president of the United States. I’m running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together.”

Harris said she will make a more formal announcement Sunday in Oakland.

Harris, 54, has served in the Senate since January 2017. Prior to that, she served six years as California attorney general. Harris was the first woman of both Jamaican-American and Indian-American heritage to be elected the top law enforcement official of a U.S. state. She is the first African-American to represent California in the U.S. Senate.

Harris is a staunch opponent of the Trump administration, most notably on policies related to immigration enforcement.

In entering the 2020 fray, she joins a growing chorus of candidates that include several women. Among them are fellow Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii). Male candidates include former congressmen John Delaney (Md.) and Julian Castro (Texas).

Prospective candidates are said to include former Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (Texas).
