Rep. Joe Kennedy III to deliver Democratic State of the Union response
WASHINGTON – Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) will deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s Tuesday evening State of the Union address.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made the announcement in a joint statement on Thursday night.
Kennedy, 37, is a grandson of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and a great-nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, who also represented Massachusetts.
The younger Kennedy has served in Congress since 2013.
The joint statement said Virginia Del. Elizabeth Guzman, who is the first immigrant Hispanic female elected to the state’s legislature, will deliver a Spanish-language response to the address on behalf of the Democratic Party.
The Democratic leaders say Kennedy and Guzman will emphasize that “Democrats are laser-focused on enacting policies to benefit middle-class Americans, not special interests or the wealthiest.”
