Gifted and talented students protest: ‘Save Our City, No Budget Cuts!’
About 30 students and their supporters in the social justice community gathered Tuesday in front of the Baltimore City Public School Administration building to stage a protest in Baltimore.
At 5 p.m. the School Board was planning a meeting to discuss the budget for the coming school year. The students were concerned that the Board intended to cut the budgets of both Poly and City high schools, which might include their successful gifted “Ingenuity” project and International Baccalaureat (“IB”) programs.
Speaking on camera in order of appearance are students: “Makayla” Gilliam-Price, Sophie Bauerschmidt Sweeney and Brianna Jackson. City Councilman Bill Henry, among other politicos, opposed any cuts to the programs. Flash: The School Board eventually voted to fully fund both gifted programs by a 7-2 vote.
