Supreme Court: Trump has Substantial Protection from Prosecution
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that former President Donald Trump has substantial immunity from prosecution for official acts committed while in office, but not for unofficial acts.
The Court ruled in a 6-3 decision, which is a major win for Trump. The Court did send the matter back down to a lower court, as the justices did not apply the ruling to the Jan. 6 insurrection case.
“The President enjoys no immunity for his unofficial acts, and not everything the President does is official,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority.
The Court rejected a decision from a federal appeals decision last February, which said the former president has no immunity for actions he took to reverse the 2020 election.
The Court said presidents enjoy immunity for official acts but not every act is official, and to determine what is official will be up to the lower courts to decide.
Trump posted on Truth Social, “BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!”
Baltimore Post-Examiner is run by a creative cadre of dedicated journalists – some who worked at the Washington Post, Baltimore Examiner and other regional and national publications. It’s the Post-Examiner because we love the play on the word “Post” but we are also hoping to answer that question: What’s next after newspapers? We see a lot of websites come and go – and many simply are not making it for various reasons. We have been a model of success since we launched in 2012 with “a little bit of everything” and we aim to continue to break that cycle of websites coming and going.
