Poll: Biden maintains solid lead among Democrats ahead of expected announcement
WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Joe Biden maintains a solid lead among 2020 Democratic primary voters, according to a poll released Wednesday.
The Ipsos/Reuters poll found that 24% of the respondents said they support Biden, who reportedly will announce his candidacy on Thursday.
Meanwhile, 15% said they support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Seven percent said they support South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Six percent said they support former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (Texas). The same percentage said they support Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.).
Five percent said they support Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.).
Three percent said they support Sen. Cory Booker (N.J.).
The other candidates polled at 1% or below.
The survey included 4,018 respondents and was carried out Apr. 17-23. It has a margin of error or plus or minus 1.8%.
Biden was expected to announce his candidacy this morning but a decision was made on Tuesday to delay the announcement for 24 hours.
Polls have consistently shown Biden leading the ever-growing Democratic field, which now includes 19 candidates.
Polls also have shown that Biden would handily defeat President Donald Trump.
It is unclear if Biden’s expected candidacy will be affected by recent accusations by several women who claimed he did not respect their personal space.
Biden has said he is sorry if he made anyone feel uncomfortable but has insisted he did not do anything that was inappropriate.
