Mayweather vs. Canelo will be the fight of the year

Just a month from now the most sensational boxer of his generation, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr., hopes to extend his record to 45-0 when he faces Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand Gardens in Las Vegas.

Mayweather is going into the fight that many believe is closest to his best weight of 152 pounds. The closest match to that weight he had was against Oscar de la Hoya May5, 2007, in the same boxing venue.

At that time he had many problems trying to reach that weight, but Mayweather still managed to reach the goal of 154 pounds.

For the fight September 14, both fighters have agreed to a “catch” weight of 152 pounds.

With a record of 45-0, there is a long list of fighters who have tried to beat Mayweather, but all have failed. Besides De La Hoya, there was “Sugar” Shane Mosley, José Luis Castillo and Arturo Gatti to name but a few.

Many of those fighters tried to apply constant pressure throughout each round, but could not connect with solid blows. By the eighth round (of 12 scheduled rounds) most fighters are tired. That’s when Mayweather could take advantage.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a modern fighter with his style and certainly has the attributes to score a win. El Canelo is 13 years younger than his opponent and his style could give us a tenacious and tough battle at the MGM Grand.

It will be interesting to see what Canelo has planned, but more important will be whether or not he will be able to beat the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing right now.

Floyd will fight as he always does, keeping his opponent at medium and long distance, using his trademark tight defense. Cunning and clever, Mayweather will take advantage of the mistakes, counter-punching with precise and sharp blows.

It will be interesting to see if Mayweather tries to play any tricks on Canelo because the young lion has enough power to hurt him and perhaps score a knockout. Maybe we should prepare to see a boxing lesson instead of a bloody battle.

Viewing public generally wants exciting fight; more exciting much better-worth the pay. Whoever wins doesn’t matter. But boxing fans in contrast are not particular of excitement so long as their boxer wins, never mind excitement. Moyweather fans says, shoulder-rolling/elbowing, clinching, punch a little runs big is intelligent fighting. If this style is intelligent fighting, then, good for canelo not to initiate/do the aggression, just wait for the pound for pound king do the aggression.
This will be the problem of this fight for canelo bec he does not have the footwork quick enough to catch moyweather, but if he would not chase, the fight will be a boring one and very predictable at that i.e not on his favor for sure! There’s no way for canelo to win the fight but engage in a toe to toe. But toe to toe may not happen, bec moyweather will never fight this way, so there’s no other way for him than to chase and chase moyweather to at least have a chance of getting into a toe to toe. That if he will have an extra fuel that is more than enough for a 12-rounder. By extra fuel he could have a slim chance of hitting good shots on moyweather in the 11th-12th rounds..that, if moyweather will run out of gas, but runner always had reserved gas. Canelo to wait for moyweather to engage is intelligent fighting.Just throw good jabs, no to chasing..and the viewing public will again experience frustrating fight.

I love reading boxing fans comments when Mayweather is involved. By reading the first sentence I know who their favorite is to win. If you saw the Guerrero fight get ready for a repeat. How Sharp did Money look? With his defense minded father in his corner and only a 4 month layoff, Money will be even better! Does the young, strong bull have a chance to win, sure he does. But don’t bank on it happening. He looked good in his fight over Trout. He actually surprised me. But he got tired during the later rounds. Do that against Floyd and you will pay big! This will be the superior ability and boxing smarts of Floyd vs a good young fighter who’s not yet ready for this level of competition. Canelo’s brighter days are still ahead of him. However, Sept 14 will not be one of them…

@ Richard Storm – Drunk bar room brawler? Its fair weather boxing fans like you who are ruining the sport. You didn’t even see the fight did you? Just picked up your opinions from comments and bad journalism on the internet. Your THAT guy. FYI, there was absolutely no “brawling” in the Alvarez VS Trout fight. Quite the opposite, Alvarez showed AMAZING accuracy, counter-punching, and defensive ability. Your opinion is ridiculous by the simple fact that you believe that Professional boxing should become more like Amateur boxing. Not surprising since the only thing I see as amateur is your opinion. Alvarez by KO or Mayweather by split decision. Bank on it.

No one is going to teach Canelo something he already knows, he’s been in the business for 7 years, so just go away with your lacking of sense comments. This fight will be nothing but experience against power, even students teach professors in occasions. There’s always a first time for everything, this is the time for Mayweather to fall down.

After seeing Canelo’s last fight, I think that Floyd will destroy this Canelo kid…This won’t be much of a fight.
