Becoming a World Class Leader

Every leader has room for improvement. No matter how big your business is, or how many employees you have, you should strive to get better each day.

Many leaders get the job done well. The best managers are those willing to improve the way they work so they can inspire more people.

While leadership may come easily to some, it is still a skill you need to practice.

Don’t Be Rude

A good leader does not undermine people, especially their staff. Do not treat your employees as a commodity. Let them know that you care about them. This can be shown by respecting their opinion or seeking their advice. This will also make you a more approachable and likable leader.

Additionally, it is important to give credit when it is due. Do not hog all the attention for yourself. True leaders are very generous with giving credit. Know that any accomplishment is achieved with the help of many people.

Teach People

“As a leader, it is your job to guide people. Strong leaders are amazing coaches. They have mastered the art of supporting people and giving them lessons so they can grow. You can coach and motivate your employees by giving them feedback and encouraging them to become leaders as well.” Says Patrick Dwyer Merrill Lynch (a former BOFAML advisor.)

Patrick also advises “By teaching others, you are allowing yourself to become part of the team. Great leadership can be achieved through team building, mentoring, and guiding your employees.”

Admit When You Are Wrong

Nobody is perfect. Only a strong and confident person can admit that they are wrong. Although it may sound counterintuitive, admitting that you made a mistake makes you more honest and open. Therefore, people will respect you more.

Ask for Help

You may think that people will lose their respect for you if you ask for support. However, requesting help from your trusted staff is actually one of the most effective ways to become a better leader. A great leader knows that they should turn to their employees when they are feeling stuck. Who knows? You might even be inspired to create a new idea.

Praise People

As a leader, you should not be afraid to let others know they did a good job. Always be open to giving praise. This feedback affects the growth and development of others. If you want to give negative comments, make sure not to do it in public. As a leader, understand that your job is not to berate people.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Being a leader does not mean you shouldn’t smile or laugh anymore. Although business is meant to be taken seriously, leaders must know how to establish an environment that fosters fun and excitement. This way, you will be creating a healthy culture and an inspiring environment.
