Baby Boomers are looking to Cannabidiol (CBD) to help them treat a wide array of ailments, from joint pain to insomnia. According to research conducted by the New York University, the percentage of Boomers who have tried CBD almost doubled in 2018, from 2.6 percent to just under 5 percent.

But what exactly is CBD, and why is it exploding in popularity amongst the older crowd in particular? Read on to find out…

What is CBD?

CBD is one of around 100 cannabinoids known to man. In simpler terms, it is a compound present in cannabis, which can be extracted, isolated, and then sold, usually as an oil, cream, or tincture.

It is one of the most prevalent cannabinoids in marijuana, and, importantly, it is not psychoactive, so consuming it doesn’t induce a high in your body.

What Is CBD Used For?

Cannabidiol can be used to treat countless conditions and ailments, including sleep-related ailments such as insomnia, skin conditions, muscle and joint pain, and epilepsy.

Some research even suggests Cannabidiol could be effective in the treatment of various different types of cancers.

The condition you’re looking to treat plays a role in determining what type of CBD product is best for you.

For example, if you’re trying to tackle insomnia, you’re best off trying a Cannabidiol oil or tincture. On the other hand, if you are looking to manage a skin condition or muscle pain, a cream is usually the best option as you can apply it directly onto the affected area.

Why is CBD So Popular Among Boomers?

CBD is on the rise across all age groups and demographics in countries like the United States, Canada, and the UK. Still, it is proving particularly popular among Baby Boomers.

This is because it can be used to treat ailments that are especially prevalent in the elderly. Furthermore, many seniors tend to have a preference for seeking out natural methods of treatment, though this isn’t always the case.

CBD will likely continue to grow in popularity across all generations, especially as more and more supporting research is published, and as a greater percentage of Americans discover all of the potential benefits Cannabidiol offers.

What About Other Cannabinoids Like CBN?

Cannabinol (CBN) is another cannabinoid. While it can treat many of the same ailments and conditions as CBD – such as insomnia, inflammation, and anxiety – there are a few important differences between them.

Firstly, CBD is legal in far more countries than CBN, so unless you live in North American, it’s quite likely that CBN products are illegal in your country. This is because CBN oil is believed to be mildly psychoactive, so most governments are unsurprisingly reluctant to legalize it (as it’s a substance which can induce a high.)

Another important difference is the size and stage each market is at. The CBD market is considerably more established than the market for CBN products, so far more trusted suppliers and products can choose from.

A Quick Summary

  • CBD products are growing in popularity, especially among Baby Boomers.
  • This is because CBD can be used to treat many ailments that are quite prevalent among Boomers.
  • In many ways, CBN is a rival of CBD, as they can treat many of the same conditions.
  • However, there are some critical differences between the two. For example, CBN is legal in far fewer countries than CBD.
