Winter storm is not over yet

The snow that coated most of the state on Wednesday resulted in more than 170,000 power outages; power for some might not be restored until Friday.

Sleet and ice have prevented Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. from restoring power, but utility officials said they are hopeful that by late Thursday evening most will have power back on. Repair work has been slowed because of trees that fell during the storm.

But the storm is not over. Strong winds are expected to cause new outages and more wintery mix should be coating the roads overnight.

Many residential roads have yet to be plowed, making it nearly impossible for some to get to work or leave their residences. Most of the outages were in Baltimore County and Carroll County.

Forecasters are predicting warmer temperatures, but it’s still close to freezing in many parts of the state.
