Things to do in New York State

If you’re planning a vacation, then you know how hard it can be just to decide where to go. You have a set budget and make a mental check-list of what the vacation should provide: are you going for peace and tranquility, or excitement and plenty to do? What you don’t have yet, however, is a destination–and with so many options, it can be hard to choose. A great location to start with is New York State. Besides offering New York City, New York also offers beautiful and interesting attractions. Each one is different, and one might be perfect for “your type” of vacation.

It’s pretty obvious–but one of the best things to do in New York is visit New York City. From seeing the Statue of Liberty to eating a hot dog in Central Park, you won’t run out of things to do. You can snag tickets to a Yankees game, or go see a Broadway show. New York can keep you busy and entertained every hour of your stay, so if you’re looking for excitement, head to the Big Apple.

Cooperstown

Not as crazy as New York, and a nice mix of tranquil and fun, Cooperstown is a great destination that’s right off the side of Otsego Lake. You can take a taxi from Albany International airport to Cooperstown and enjoy Cooperstown’s many attractions. Home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown also holds the Fenimore Art Museum and Farmers’ Museum.

The Adirondacks

The Adirondacks are beautiful, tree-covered hills, resting beside a lake. Gorgeous in autumn, they’re a breath-taking glimpse of nature at any time of year, and you can stay in lake-side cabins, go canoeing, and hike through the woods. If you’re looking for nothing but pure peace, the Adirondacks might be the destination for you.

Niagara Falls
If you go to the US/Canada border, you can access Niagara falls from New York State. Beautiful, impressive, and a popular tourist destination, Niagara Falls is made up of three waterfalls: the Bridal Veil Falls, the American Falls, and the Horseshoe Falls. Roughly 4 millions cubic meters of water pour off the falls every minute, creating some pretty stunning views. You can tour the falls on above-water walkways by taking a boat trip or paying extra to tour in a helicopter!

Syracuse
While there are many cities in New York worth visiting (so many we don’t have time in this article!), Syracuse is one to have on your list. It hosts a number of wonderful museums, including the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology, the Erie Canal Museum, and the Everson Museum of Art. It has a great zoo (The Rosamond Gifford Zoo) and boasts Destiny USA, the largest mall in New York state. It’s also home to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, one of the most famous barbeque sites in the country. If you want great museums and entertainment, for less hassle and expense than New York City, Syracuse might be the perfect compromise.
