For the sixth time in her career, Serena Williams has won the Wimbledon Women’s Singles Title Saturday Morning. It is also her 21st Grand Slam title as well.
Williams will be trying for a calendar year Grand Slam when she competes in the U.S. Open, which begins August 31.
Williams defeated Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza, ranked 20th before this match, 6-4, 6-4. Muguruza jumped to an early lead in the first set, but Williams was able to come back and then keep the pressure on in the second set.
Muguruza wasn’t done though. She was down 5-3 in the second set, but was able to break Williams’ serve twice, before Williams finally won the set and the title.
This is Williams’ fourth straight major Grand Slam title and if she wins the U.S. Open she will have accomplished a rare feat in tennis. The last woman to do it was Steffi Graf, in 1988., who also won Olympic Gold that year.
Baltimore Post-Examiner is run by a creative cadre of dedicated journalists – some who worked at the Washington Post, Baltimore Examiner and other regional and national publications. It’s the Post-Examiner because we love the play on the word “Post” but we are also hoping to answer that question: What’s next after newspapers? We see a lot of websites come and go – and many simply are not making it for various reasons. We have been a model of success since we launched in 2012 with “a little bit of everything” and we aim to continue to break that cycle of websites coming and going.
