Paddy’s Road Race is a hit in West Newton, MA
The Paddy’s Road Race was off to another successful run on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, under sunny skies with the temperature hovering around 65 degrees. It was a three mile foot race held in the town of West Newton, MA, just outside of Boston.
“There’s Off!”
And, trust me when I say that it had more than a touch of Ireland to it. It’s official name is: “Paddy’s Pub Shilelagh Shuffle Road Race.” Try that one on for size. To learn more about the event, now in its 15th year, check out the website.
Of course, the lively festivities featured some terrific Irish step and celi dancing by some very skilled, youthful participants. Plus, there was an Irish Lephechaun seen in the crowd. He was dressed all in green, with a green tie and green hat. He had a black beard, too.
All proceeds from the event go to the “Athletes Unlimited Newton.” The calendar of events noted that it is “one of the largest recreation-based programs for people with disabilities in all of New England.” To learn more about this wonderful charity check out – “Athletes Unlimited Newton.”
The program claimed there were about 2,500 runners participating. To me, it seemed like everybody in town was involved and all of them were having a terrific time. It was like a huge “Family Day” outing or some might think – “Block Party!”
They even gave out some delicious chicken pot pie and hot dogs, fruit, juices, candy bars & coffee – free to all. Naturally, the people couldn’t have been happier.
“American Flag over Elm Street”
The local Fire Department draped a huge American flag over Elm Street – the primary boulevard through West Newton. It made for a perfect symbol for this spirited, joy-filled happening in the best small town tradition of our America.
