As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday this week and the nationwide release of the movie Selma this month, we do so because Dr. King inspired us to be great. He didn’t gather huge crowds in Washington, DC with the words, “I have a New Year’s resolution today.” No, he had a dream and it impacted all of us. When Jesus the Christ ministered he didn’t do so with the directive, “I have come that you might heal your inner child.” His mission was to remind us that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. Freedom, unity, peace, abundance. These are not simple, small words but powerful ideals and revolutionary mandates. And they need the clear guidance that only a compelling vision, spoken by a true visionary, can provide to come alive.
And that’s where we, as conscious creators, come in. Do you have a vision for your life? How about a vision for 2015? I’m not talking about mere resolutions or energizing goals but something deeper. Who have you come here to be? Catching a vision for our lives always asks us to become much more than we ever thought we could be. As the ancient scriptures say, the truth will set you free, but first it will make you you.
So how do you know what your vision is? Chances are your vision is not your job. Some of your soul’s work may be expressed through your livelihood, but how many of us work for a living and how many others work for a life? Visions may be encountered in dreams, but make no mistake, they are meant to wake you up and not lull you to sleep. No, a vision speaks so loud that it drowns out all the nagging, incessant voices that tell you constantly that you are not enough.
There are three consistent characteristics at the heart of many visions. First, they are affirmative in that they lead you toward what you do want to experience as opposed to what you hope won’t show up in your life. For example, saying no to violence will ultimately not be as effective as saying yes to world peace. Second, they are so large in scope and so grand in scale that realizing their universal nature will take your breath away. Liberating India was indeed a vision, whereas finding the best Indian restaurant probably isn’t. Third, they are divine in origin because you know that they emanated from a Source far greater than you can imagine. Never in your wildest dreams could you have designed the complexities that make up a single human being.
Once seen, heard and/or known, embracing the vision that has been revealed is the domain of the revolutionary. It takes great courage to do so because you must give up the life you have in order to embrace the life that is waiting for you. Since most men lead lives of quiet desperation, a revolution often takes place in thought as well as deed. And since our collective history relishes stories of martyrdom and the inevitable outcome that those who speak truth die, we may at first refuse the call to greatness. But we will never be content with the littleness of our lives until we step up and out.
Ultimately, you don’t just have a vision, you become one. You become a master of metamorphosis as transformation of self and others becomes the new normal. A sense of inner peace pervades your heart and mind as you listen to the promptings of a higher purpose and deeper devotion.
When all is said and done you find, as musician Jeri Lynne Fraser sings, “There’s nothing left but Love. Life flows. Life goes. Your Self comes shining through. Your Inner Eye can see, there’s nothing left to be but You.”
