Unite Here, Local 7, social activists support Hyatt Hotel workers at rally
On late Thursday afternoon, Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, members of Unite Here, Local 7, along with social justice activists, rallied in support of the Hyatt Hotel workers. The spirited action took place in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor at McKeldin Square. The hotel has opposed the unionization of its workers and their efforts to obtain from management “fair treatment and safer working conditions,” according to the union’s press release. After speeches at McKeldin Square, the demonstrators, about two hundred strong, paraded over to the front of the Hyatt Hotel on Light Street, holding candles and chanting. They then formed a picket line. The workers want Hyatt to add “a hotel worker to its Board of Directors.” The union has also launched a boycott of all Hyatt Hotels. The popular Councilwoman, Mary Pat Clarke (14th District), spoke at the event, as did members of the clergy and the union. To learn more, click here.
