Stephen Varanko III – Breaking Down the Champions League Favorites

My buddy Stephen Varanko III and I have followed football for long enough to know that during a knockout competition, just about anyone can win. In the case of the Champions League however this is not quite so true, and whilst Spurs shocked the world last year in reaching the final, surprises are rarely something we see with such a prestigious competition. With this in mind then, Stephen and I firmly believe that one of the favorites will lift this year’s trophy, so today we are going to take a look and see which has the best chance.

Manchester City

Despite their incredible domestic form in the past 6 years, Manchester City are still awaiting their first Champions League crown. The oddsmakers have the Citizens as favorites this year, and it is hard to see past this brilliant squad. Pep Guardiola will have all but conceded the Premier League title to Liverpool, which gives him the chance to lay all of his focus into lifting the club’s first Champions League. The key to City success will be to keep the players fit, do that and City will be tough to beat.

Liverpool

Finalists for the last 2 years and winners of the 18/19 tournament, the Reds will once again be looking to reclaim their title as kings of Europe. Liverpool are 2nd favorites and the way that they have demolished the Premier League shows that everyone in the CL should be running scared. Liverpool have lost just 1 game in the whole of 2019, and amassed ridiculous points tallies in the process. Their second leg destruction of Barcelona last year show just how good this team can be, and back-to-back titles wouldn’t be a surprise.

Barcelona

Barcelona almost reached the final last year before throwing away a 3-0 advantage against Liverpool, something which Messi and co will be looking to get revenge for this season. Barcelona have a job on their hands domestically to keep Real Madrid at bay, but with players like Messi, Suarez, Griezmann and some of the fantastic young stars they have, you really wouldn’t it past Ernesto Valdeverde’s outfit to achieve greatness this season. Barcelona could do it this year, but they will have to rely on a kind draw and some special nights at the Nou Camp.

Paris St. Germain

For all the millions spent, this is still a trophy, which eludes the Parisian outfit, something they will be hoping to put to bed this year. This is a wonderful team to watch and in Kylian Mbappe they arguably have the most in-form player in the world in their side. Add to the mix players like Neymar, Verratti, Thiago Silva and Angel Di Maria, and it is easy to see why this side are 4th favorites to go all the way. PSG will have to get better at game management if they want to reach the dizzying heights that they are aiming for.

Who do you think wins the Champions League this season?
