MarylandReporter.com ‘Best of Baltimore’ again; SPJ honors website
For the second year in a row, Baltimore magazine has named MarylandReporter.com the best “political website.”
In the magazine that arrived in the mail Tuesday — but not yet online — the editors said: “Edited and published by Len Lazarick, the nonprofit website Maryland Reporter covers state politics and the General Assembly with unusual breadth and depth. A former Washington Post national copy desk editor, Lazarick later served as State House bureau chief for the Baltimore Examiner until its demise. Maryland Reporter provides original reporting, roundups of political news, a blog, and newsy podcasts — all done with professionalism.”
Last month, the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalist named Lazarick and MarylandReporter.com the winner of its blog category in the chapter’s 2013 Dateline Awards for Excellence in Local Journalism. Glynis Kazanjian of MarylandReporter.com was also a finalist in the “General News” category for her story, “Dead people voted and registered to vote, watchdog group finds.”
The Maryland chapter of SPJ also gave first place prizes in April to MarylandReporter.com for its blog and general news coverage.
Both SPJ contests were judged by journalists from other states, but they did not offer any comments in the online news category.

At the DC SPJ Awards dinner at the National Press Club in June four journalists were inducted in the chapter’s Hall of Fame: NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell, Washington Post sports columnist Thomas Boswell, author and political journalist Haynes Johnson (who died May 24) and New York Times/CBS News/PBS correspondent Terence Smith.
Also, the chapter gave its 2013 Distinguished Service Award to Steve Geimann, deputy team leader at the Bloomberg News Washington bureau. Geimann, a former national president of SPJ and chair of its Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, was an early and major donor to MarylandReporter.com, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
