LifeSpan Network to dedicate mural in honor of late Mayer Handelman
Baltimore pharmacist founded Woodhaven pharmacy in 1954
LifeSpan Network will celebrate its annual membership meeting on December 8 with the unveiling of a mural dedicated to late Baltimore pharmacist Mayer Handelman.
Handelman, who founded Woodhaven pharmacy in 1954, passed away in 2015. A pioneer in elder care in the Baltimore area, he helped to form the LifeSpan senior care association in the late 1980s. In 1994, he sold Woodhaven Institutional Services – at the time, the largest institutional pharmacy company in the state – to NeighborCare Pharmacies. He also helped form and served on the board of The Beacon Institute, LifeSpan’s educational affiliate.
The artwork will feature a list of winners of The Handelman Award, an annual award given by LifeSpan Network and The Beacon Institute in partnership with the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists in recognition of extraordinary service and educational leadership in the in the field of senior care. Remedi SeniorCare’s Bill Vaughn was named the first Handelman Award winner in October.
LifeSpan’s annual membership meeting will also feature a talk by Nelson Sabatini, former state health secretary and current chairman of the state’s Health Services Cost Review Commission.
