AFTER MORE THAN 40 YEARS, THE BEASEL BROTHERS RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ‘LIVING IN THE PAST LANE’
Tim and Greg Maier rescue deteriorating studio tapes, preserve their early performances and reunite as songwriters
BALTIMORE, Md. — November 7, 2026 — More than four decades after brothers Tim and Greg Maier recorded their original songs in a Chicago studio, the acoustic duo known as the Beasel Brothers has released its debut album, Living in the Past Lane. The 10-track collection brings together music written and recorded in the late 1970s and early 1980s, newly restored for listeners today.
The brothers once performed together with two acoustic guitars, close vocal harmonies and songs that moved freely among folk, country, rock, bluegrass and soul. Then their lives took different directions. Careers and families followed, while their studio recordings remained packed away for decades.
When the brothers rediscovered the tapes, time had taken its toll. The magnetic recordings suffered from hiss, speed problems and other deterioration. Using modern audio tools, including AI-assisted restoration and re-engineering, Tim and Greg worked to recover the music while preserving the original vocals and guitar performances. They added instrumentation where appropriate without losing the character of the analog sessions.
“This wasn’t about trying to make ourselves sound young again,” the brothers said. “Those young voices were already there. We wanted to preserve what we had created and let the songs live again.”
THE SOUND — AND THE STORIES
Greg’s rhythm guitar and fingerpicking provide the foundation of the duo’s sound; Tim’s melodic lead guitar adds counterpoint and expressive solos. Their intertwined acoustic parts and vocal harmonies move from tender reflection to driving country-rock energy, always serving the songs.
Living in the Past Lane explores love, separation, growing up, perseverance, loneliness, family and the passage of time. “Do You Still Think About Me” revisits a lingering question after a relationship ends. “Growing Pains” considers the transition into adulthood; “Hold On” is about enduring difficult turns; and “Needing Someone” speaks to the need for connection. “Poems Are Only Memorized” reveals the brothers’ introspective side.
“Where Has All the Time Gone By,” the closing track, reflects on parents and how quickly a lifetime passes. The album begins with “Carry Myself,” written in 1981 as the brothers were going their separate ways. Once rooted in a particular moment of loss and change, the song now speaks more broadly to finding the strength to move forward. A song written near the end of their first musical chapter fittingly opens their return.
A SECOND ACT
The album is more than a restoration project. Returning to the old recordings rekindled the brothers’ songwriting partnership. They are revisiting an extensive catalog of unreleased songs and writing new material, bringing decades of experience to the music they first began creating as young men.
“We can’t go back and become the two young guys who made those recordings,” the brothers said. “But we can finish what they started — and keep writing from where we are today.”
