Obama has no secret plan to ban guns; Fanatical gun culture leads to senseless deaths

One of the many right wing messages seen on Facebook lately is a picture of Adolph Hitler with the words written on the picture: “GUN CONTROL IS NOT ABOUT GUNS … IT’S ABOUT CONTROL.”

Another one of these messages shows people lined up against a wall, a woman getting her arms twisted behind her by two Chinese soldiers as another soldier prepares to shoot her in the back of the head. The words on that one being, “GUN CONTROL IS GREAT … IF YOU’RE THE ONE CONTROLLING THE GUNS.”

Pretty heady stuff. Makes you want to go out and buy a gun.

Every time there is a very public shooting the gun fanatics jump out to defend the Second Amendment and everybody’s precious right to own a gun. My definition of a gun “fanatic” is someone who gets hysterically and/or offensively defensive about the right to bear arms whenever someone with a gun commits murder.

The usual response from these fanatics is, “This is not the time to talk about gun control.” Or, “This isn’t the time to politicize this event.” Which, as Ezra Klein of the Washington Post pointed out, is exactly how the pro gun fanatics politicize events like mass killings.

And now that the pro gun fanatics have duly politicized this latest outrage I’ll continue.

Anyone who owns a gun can commit murder with that weapon. Just about every person who commits murder believes they were justified in taking those lives. People who commit murder with guns do so far more easily than those who do it with other weapons. Guns do not require the killers to get close to their victims. Guns make it easier to kill. That is why they were invented. Guns were not invented to make hunting game easier. That was just a fringe benefit.

In Florida a man (Michael David Dunn) doesn’t like the volume of the music coming from a car next to his at a convenience store so after a heated argument he pumps eight rounds into the noisy car and kills one of the occupants (Jordan Russell Davis) sitting in the back seat. Florida has not only a law that allows almost anyone to have a conceal and carry permit, the state’s more famous provision is their “stand your ground” law which explicitly states you can pull out a gun and start shooting if you feel your life or property are threatened.

Michael David Dunn pumped eight rounds into a car, killing a teen because the teen’s music was too loud. His attorney said he was justified.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise Dunn pleaded not guilty and his attorney claims Dunn acted as any responsible gun owner would in that situation.

Several states have “conceal and carry” and “stand your ground” laws and the NRA and other groups, like the Koch Brothers funded ALEC, are pushing for those laws in all the states. Why? Their strategy is to create and stoke fear, i.e. law enforcement can’t protect you from the thieves, rapists and murderers and then transform that fear into a need for self-protection.

Some state legislatures are reluctant to pass conceal and carry and stand your ground laws, so to get around it the measures are put to a ballot initiative so the voters can decide the issue. The rabid gun owners then turn out to vote for those measures.

Of course, in Michigan the state legislature pushed through two gun laws, in a midnight lameduck session. The first does away with “gun free zones,” although the legislators were smart enough to keep the Capitol Building gun free. That law would make it legal for people with conceal and carry permits to bring guns into schools, daycares, hospitals, churches, parks and playgrounds.

The second law does away with the county review boards that actually review applications from people seeking conceal and carry permits. If the governor signs it, which he is expected to do since both pieces of legislation were written by ALEC so opposing them would have political consequences; when the governor signs it all someone need do is apply … and then the sheriff will stamp approved because several sheriffs in Michigan said they would not oppose any conceal carry permit requests because doing so would leave them open to law suits.

Michigan is just the latest state to try and go back to the days of the wild, Wild West. I blame it on the cable networks that have started showing reruns of all those old Western TV shows, like Gunsmoke, The Rifleman and Bonanza. People see how cool it was to carry a gun like Matt Dillon.

The deeper problem though, as Bob Costas pointed out on Sunday Night Football, the day after a football player killed his girlfriend and then himself, isn’t just the guns and the hilariously ineffective gun laws, it’s the gun culture. Our culture. Many people feel a need to have a gun, to carry a gun at all times and they feel justified in being able to blast away when the situation calls for it, as they define the circumstances of those situations.

It is becoming more and more acceptable to not only have a gun, but to also carry that gun in public. We all remember (I hope) the nuts that showed up at presidential events with firearms. There was that one nut in New Hampshire with his sidearm strapped to his leg, carrying a sign referencing a now infamous quote from Thomas Jefferson: “It is time to water the tree of Liberty.”

Afterward, William Kostric (the man with the gun holding the sign) went on Hardball With Chris Matthews to explain himself. He made no sense in his denial that his sign and gun were threats toward the president.

After someone like Bob Costas speaks out about this gun culture the pro-gun fanatics attack people like Costas for doing so, as if his being a sportscaster is a barrier to having an opinion and the right to express that opinion. The wing nuts on Fox excoriated Costas for two days after that Sunday Night broadcast. Apparently the only people who have a right to express their opinions about guns and our gun culture are those who do not oppose in any way guns and our gun culture.

When Barack Obama was first elected president the first thing the NRA (under the guidance of Wayne LaPierre) did was gin up fear about Obama coming to take away everyone’s guns. Gun sales shot up so fast gun manufacturers couldn’t keep up with demand.

No such legislation was ever proposed or even spoken of during Obama’s two presidential campaigns, but that was easy to get around — LaPierre just claimed it was a secret plan. Well, if it’s a secret plan …

In fact President Obama has relaxed gun laws. He signed legislation that makes it legal to carry firearms into federal parks. And hyper-conservative Congressman Darrel Issa of California accused President Obama of being too lax on enforcement of gun laws.

But it’s all part of Obama’s secret plan …

That’s the gun culture in America, our culture. Forty-nine states have conceal and carry laws (Illinois and Washington, DC do not) and 21 states have “Stand Your Ground” laws. Philosophically it means as a culture we are becoming more accustomed and eager to carry guns and have the ability to shoot people when we, as individuals, deem it appropriate.

None of us (I hope) thought it was appropriate for Chief’s linebacker Jovan Belcher to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins, but Belcher apparently thought it was. And then he killed himself. George Zimmerman thinks it was appropriate for him to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin in Florida. A jury will decide if he was right.

Jacob Tyler Roberts thought it was appropriate to walk into an Oregon mall and open fire. James Eagen Holmes thought the same thing when he entered a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado and killed 12 people. One of the most common responses to that shooting: if other patrons had been armed they could have stopped Holmes.

The theme behind that thinking being that if we’re all armed and deadly crime will go down because criminals will be afraid of the rest of us. I lived in a part of San Diego that has a high incidence of gang activity. Armed gangsters know there are other armed people in the community. They are not intimidated by that reality at all. And the idea of three, four, five or more people with guns opening fire in a crowded movie theater ought to give you pause, if not outright fear.

Bullets go wherever the gun barrel points and they will penetrate anything not able to withstand their force. Well meaning Joe Citizen with his Glock 9 wouldn’t intend for his bullets to penetrate the movie theater wall and strike an innocent person watching a movie in the next theater, but would that make Joe Citizen any less culpable? Make that five Joe Citizens responding with a gun to a shooter like James Eagen Holmes and then how many bullets would be flying in every direction?

Will stricter gun laws and closing the “Gun Show Loophole” (that allows anyone to buy guns at gun shows without background checks) end violent crime? Of course not, but it will lower the rate of gun deaths. What this country needs to do no legislation can change: we need to get away from being so fanatically a gun culture.

We may actually be getting there.

Statistics show that close to 90 percent of Americans think gun laws should be tougher, 71 percent of NRA members. Most Americans do not want criminals, terrorists and people with dangerous mental illnesses to buy firearms. The Gun Show Loophole makes it possible for all three to buy guns. And yet the NRA and ALEC oppose closing that loophole. Because of that loophole, 40 percent of the guns purchased in the U.S. are not registered.

For the “Ban All Guns Now!” fanatics: it’s never gonna happen. There are 150,000,000 gun owners in America with more than 280,000,000 registered guns. No one really knows how many guns are not registered, but the firearms industry is making more than five million guns a year. And they still find it hard to keep up with demand.

The U.S. government is not going to try and disarm half of its citizens, regardless of who occupies the Oval Office. And the fanatics on either side of the issue that believe the federal government would try are far beyond delusional.

I didn’t even talk about banning assault weapons. There are millions out there now, legally and who knows how many unregistered and illegal. That genie ain’t going back in the bottle.

No pro gun fanatics, gun control isn’t about the guns or the control, it’s about the 30,000-plus gun deaths per year. It’s about the easy access to guns that allows someone like Adam Lanza  to walk into an elementary school and kill 26  people — 27 if you count his mother killed in her home.

Granted, Lanza took the weapons from his mother, who had legally purchased them, so tougher gun laws may not have stopped Friday’s rampage in Newtown, Connecticut. But we will never really know.

To the nut bars like William Kostric: the Tree of Liberty is watered every day in this country, with the blood of its citizens. That is the price we pay to be such a fanatical gun culture.

The only thing I feel able to say is that the author of this article has helped to demonstrate by example that the Baltimore Post-Examiner can not and should not be taken seriously. This piece of writing would have been perfectly fine as an opinion, since opinions do not have to be true or accord with facts. Serious news stories, however, are different and should make at least some effort to aviod obvious bias and untruths.

If -and I do stress the IF, because I did not and still do not see the words “left coast logic” anywhere on this page- what you say is true, then I have judged the Baltimore Post-Examiner too harshly. Of course it is an opinion piece, anyone can see that. My problem with it is that AS FAR AS I COULD (and can) TELL it is not so presented. To me, this is presented as a news article, not a blog. It has the title of a news publication at the top of the page. it has the title of the article. Whatever it may be in reality, as far as I can tell it is presented as actual news and I so judged it as an attempt at actual news. Maybe that was wrong, but it still doesn’t look that way.

I can’t help but note that instead of information, you reply with sarcasm. You made the claim that this ‘article’ was part of a blog entitled ‘left coast logic’ as far as I remember, but you have failed to comment on the fact that any indication of that seems to be missing from this page. You also have not explained why an allegedly reputable tabloid is presenting opinions as news. Instead of any of this, you reply with sarcasm and insults. I feel I need not point out the lack of professionalism and maturity that your childish manner indicates.
And yes, if your opinions are being presented in the same manner as unbiased news there SHOULD be some sort of notice or information to so indicate, and the fact that there is not is unprofessionalism on the part of the Baltimore Post-Examiner.
Further, I would like to point out (since you obviously did not see it) that at the very top of my initial post were the words IN ALL CAPS no less, “assuming this article was meant to be taken seriously…” Obviously, in spite of its presentation, it was not. Unfortunately, since my tenth grade education included several honors classes but no training in the psychic arts, I was unable to tell that it was being falsely presented.

Every law that applies outside gun shows applies inside the doors. Federal Firearms Licensees (a.k.a., gun dealers or FFLs) at a gun show must fill out their ATF Form 4473s and do their FBI background (NICS) checks just as if they were at their shops (or their homes for that matter).

No one should be allowed to own a baseball bat, either. Or a car. Or a knife. Or a razor blade. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a stick. Or a crowbar. Or a screwdriver. This will surely make America much safer; and unlike firearms, there is no law built into the very foundation of the United States forbidding any government interference in owning these other dangerous weapons.

You forget the nature of the second ammendment. It doesn’t MATTER whether or not anyone NEEDS an assault rifle. That is competely and totally irrelevant, and the purpose of the amendment itself has nothing to do with either hunting or personal self defense.
And as far as assult rifles are concerned, pistols are involved in far more crimes and are far more dangerous, and for that matter involved in far more accidental deaths. Its hard to hide a rifle, and it weighs a whole lot more, whether or not it has ‘assault’ tacked on, and a semi-automatic pistol will fire just as fast as a semi-automatic ‘assault’ rifle. I say semi-automatic, because that’s the way they come if you buy them legally.
There is one thing an assault rifle does that a pistol does not- inspire fear, most of it undeserved. As such, an assault rifle seems to me a more effective deterrent than a pistol becuase it has so fearsome a reputation.
On the other hand, pistols (and shotguns) are much more effective (and dangerous) for short distance shooting becuse in the case of one you don’t have a long barrel to align with a target and in the other you don’t have to be exactly on target.

That’s something I think you purposely edited out. You want people to think those laws allow people to carry within hospitals, schools, etc. which is a lie you’re telling because it is not true. Instead of attacking the NRA you should attack the State’s which have the Open Gun Loop law which means vendors can sell firearms at gun shows to people with no ID and don’t perform a background check. Gangs roam freely, killing young children, the elderly, and even

everywhere in the hands of criminals, while law abiding citizens are
banned from defending themselves. This is the result of the gun
control laws that Obama supports so strongly. They have turned
Chicago into a swamp infested with murder, rape, assault, home
invasion robbery, car-jacking, and muggings. This is what happens
when you ban guns. Criminals run free, unfettered by the same laws

When you want to stir the pot, please check your facts before shooting off. Vermont is the one state without Concealed Carry Laws, any citizen that can legally own a handgun can legally carry it concealed without a permit… not Illinois. The William Kostric incident was in New Hampshire, not Vermont. The Oregon mall shooter was in fact stopped by an armed citizen. Granted he did not fire a single shot, but as soon as the shooter saw he was armed the next shot he fired ended his spree.

The Gun Show Loophole is just a media buzzword. At any legit gun show when buying a gun from a vendor you still get the standard FBI background check.

The states with the most relaxed gun control laws also happen to be the safest. New York, California, Massachusetts and Connecticut have some of the harshest laws. Yet people like Mayor Menino of Boston want to pass more laws to help fight illegal guns. Yes, they want to make something illegal… more illegal.

And just to be nitpicky, a 9mm projectile from a Glock 19 wouldn’t penetrate through a movie theater wall.

Why is it ok for police to have guns, and carry concealed off the job? Gun laws only affect normal citizens not police. Now you may think police are here to protect us their good people. Very true, but I can think of 8 cases that a police off duty killed someone. One of those cases a cop killed kids at a party and then killed himself. Never heard of that right? Google (police officer, kills, standoff) see all that you’ll find. Tomiekia Johnson a sheriff shot and killed her husband. Recently a police officer was arrested for a drive by OFF duty.

What I’m saying is people go crazy and kill. Doesn’t matter what profession, race, or age. If we want to take certain guns away from citizens then please finally make the law for police too. What happens if a person goes crazy with an ar15? right? well what happens when a cop goes crazy with his ar15 because cops don’t get affected by bans. It has happened! A cop shot another in LA, CA with an Ak47 DURING the assault weapons ban. All what I say is true find it online to verify…

Here are the headlines from the small amount of time that has elapsed since the massacres of the week, first in Oregon, then in Connecticut: “A gunman fired at least 50 rounds in the crowded parking lot of the
Fashion Island shopping mall, but Newport Beach police are unclear about
a motive…” “Authorities say an Indiana man who had 47 guns and ammunition in his
home has been arrested after allegedly threatening to kill people at an
elementary school near his home…” “Authorities say an Alabama police officer who was shot after a triple killing and a two-county chase is improving.”… So many shootings in less than 2 days SINCE the absolutely intolerable slaughter in Connecticut, that the failed massacre attempt in that California parking lot last night (50 rounds were fired but people took cover) barely makes the headlines. So, gun fanatics, the answer to gun violence is, what else, more guns. How’s that working out? Well, let me tell you how it’s working out for me. I don’t intend to live in a state of armed siege just because gun creeps need to stroke their, uhm, weapons. The time for compromise with the gun nuts is over. The lefts wet dream is to have total control over everyone and you have to disarm them frist to do that.

I don’t know what you are talking about. The liberals are not about taking away rights….HMMMMM…washington state just issued some rights, and so did Colorado…..

That quote is ridiculously out of context. The NRA has been saying the same thing about Obama before he even became president.

You mean, we can “have your guns when we pry them from your cold dead fingers,” as the bumper-sticker mentality of gun nuts likes to say? Your proposal is accepted. If taking your precious gun will save having to look at another bullet-riddled corpse of a little kid, I have no problem at all with that. Start prying.

So the hell with the constitution then right? I mean these isolated incidents obviously justify abolishing the second amendment right? Only cops and military should have guns. That way the criminals know that when they have a gun they have all the power since law abiding citizens aren’t allowed to have guns. Drugs are illegal, yet I can go get any drug you name within an hour because banning something doesn’t make it vanish from the face of the earth. What happened is a sickening tragedy, but it doesn’t nullify rights.

Remember that when men with baseball bats and rocks murder someone you love because they know they are defenseless, save the incompetent, lazy police.

60% of home invasions, assaults, burglaries, rapes, and murders in the UK occur while the victims are home, versus 7% in the US.

A disarmed country is ripe with crime and abuse, which is why their crime is going up while ours is going down.

You are suffering from a mental condition very common in the hard-of-thinking. In the first place, you are blaming the tool the criminal chooses to use as if it can commit crimes on its own, but completely forgetting about the criminal him (or her) self which is where the fault lies. In the second place, you are for all intents and purposes advocating what amounts to treason, being an attack on the constitution itself, the very foundation of the United States, and the rights guaranteed to every single citizen thereof. Thirdly, your argument is based purely on emotion, rather than fact. I realize that facts may be hard to come by, especially when the opinions of the likes of Mr. Forkes are presented as being factual, but you could at least try.
Finally, you seem to have forgotten that no citizen of the United States is guaranteed safey. We are, insteed, guaranteed FREEDOM. Maybe you prefer safety to freedom, since you can have one or the other, but I would like to remind you that if you think that the actions of a criminal, one who chooses not to follow the law, justify stealing the rights and property of tens of millions, there are plenty of peaceful, law-abiding people who would rather see YOU turned into a bullet-riddled (or car-mangled, or whatever) corpse than to allow your kind to have your way.
Wanting to keep children safe is a noble and well-intentioned endeavour, but I wonder if you recall what the road to hell is paved with? I’ll give you a hint: One of them, according to Terry Pratchett, is “For the sake of the children.”

You sir are miss informed. terrorists in Israel originally used mass shootings then Israelis armed themselves. the terrorists then used bombs. you speak off gun deaths but yet what about motor vehicle deaths. Did you know there is a federal law against guns in schools? that sure helped. you want to ban something that kills how about vehicles. the CDC has dropped firearms deaths from thier top 15. How many of those gun deaths where from justified shootings.how many are from gang violence.

I don’t see a lot of comments about the nature of the shooter. This kid was obviously out to die. These mass shooters WANT to die– if not by their own hand, then death-by-cop will do. There’s a screw loose in each person that attempts or succeeds in this kind of action. This is not about gun culture, it’s about the de-sensitizing of death and killing. Pick up any video game that 14-year-old boys rave about and you can be certain that shooting, bombing, blood, and mayhem are the game’s themes. It’s glorified everywhere– music, video games, movies, television. And now the news deifies the shooter and condemns the second amendment.

You dumb ace… guess you’re going to frisk everyone at the borders too. Guns will simply go underground and become part of organized crime if you band them here. Any idiot who thinks that disarming law abiding citizens is going to reduce “gun violence “…. as opposed to violence comitted using guns, is also a believer in elves and fairies
