FlowerMart bounces back after deluge
Despite a rainfall of biblical proportions, on Friday, (well, OK, let’s try about 2 inches in and around Baltimore), the FlowerMart recovered quickly, on Saturday. It was pleased as it could be to make its annual appearance, beginning at 11 AM, in historic Mount Vernon Place. The magnificent monument to General George Washington, hero of the Republic, is its centerpiece.
This year the festival again featured live performances on two stages, and some fun-filled contests, most specially suited for the kids. There were a wide array of flowers to enjoy, along with plenty of books and art to buy. They also had a food court set up in front of a stage named after the late William Donald Schaefer himself. His ghost is surely pleased by this kind gesture.
Also on the WDS’s stage, set up on Charles Street, just north of Madison, an all-ladies’ choir was belting out some old favorites for the dining public to enjoy.
The colorful FlowerMart can traces its origins in Baltimore, not in an unbroken line, to 1911. Back then, according to its program notes, “It was the first of its kind in the nation.”
