Orioles’ Buck Showalter named Manager of the Year

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America named Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter the 2014 AL Manager of the Year Tuesday night.

“I’m pretty speechless,” Showalter said. “It’s such a great reflection on our organization…I am so thankful to get the opportunity every day. It’s something I never have taken for granted.”

Showalter received 25 out of 30 first-place votes, beating out Angels manager Mike Scioscia and Royals manager Ned Yost.

The Orioles finished the season with 96 wins and captured their first division title since 1997.

Showalter has been credited with keeping the team competitive despite losing key players throughout the season, including Matt Wieters, Manny Machado, and Chris Davis.

This is the third time Showalter has won the award. He previously took home the honors in 1994 while managing the Yankees, and in 2004 when he was at the helm for the Texas Rangers.

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams was named NL Manager of the Year.
