MarylandReporter.com celebrates 4th birthday, joins Investigative News Network

Happy Birthday 4thMarylandReporter.com turned four years old on Saturday.

When we formally launched the news website for government and politics, Nov. 2, 2009, it was exactly one year from the 2010 gubernatorial election. This Monday is exactly one year from the next gubernatorial election.

MarylandReporter.com, headed by Editor and Publisher Len Lazarick, has just been accepted as a member of the Investigative News Network.

“We are delighted to have MarylandReporter.com as a member of our network of nonprofit newsrooms which are focused on educating the public through ethically and professionally produced investigative and public service journalism,” says Kevin Davis, executive director of the Investigative News Network, a consortium of more than 90 nonprofit journalism producers across the United States.  ”MarylandReporter.com is a great example of this type of high-quality and necessary journalism.”

Among its other members are Maplight, MinnPost, the Sunlight Foundation, Open Secrets, ProPublica, the Center for Public Integrity, the Voice of San Diego and Texas Tribune.

Maryland Reporter or its staff are also members of the National Newspaper Association, the Online News Association, Watchdog.org and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Thanks to many donors and distributors

As we move into our fifth year we would like thank the foundations, sponsors and donors listed in this link who have made our work possible. They include the Abell Foundation, the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, the Leidy Foundation, the Rothschild Art Foundation, dozens of major donors and more than 200 other donors. We continue to be grateful for the initial funding provided in our first three years by the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity.

Thanks, too, to the organizations who have advertised and advocated for their causes on our pages. (MarylandReporter.com does not accept political advertising from candidates or political action committees.)

These foundations, donors and advertisers allow us distribute our content for free to any media that publishes them in full and attributes them to MarylandReporter.com. We are especially grateful to those news websites that use virtually all of our content and help give us wider distribution. They include Baltimore Post-Examiner, MoCoVox (the Voice of Montgomery County), Southern Maryland Online, Salisbury News, and the Business Monthly. Our work has also appeared in the Daily Record, the Annapolis Capital, the Carroll County Times, the Cumberland Times News. What’s Up Annapolis, Washingtonian and other newspapers and magazines.

Our local donors allow us to produce a daily State Roundup of news from over 40 websites and distribute it in a newsletter sent to 5,300 people. Consider signing up for our daily newsletter that includes links and summaries to the roundup and all our original content. It goes out Monday through Friday by 8:30 a.m.

Besides our own archives, all our original content is available on LexisNexis and others news databases through Newstex.

We’d also like to thank those organizations which have honored our content with awards this year: the Washington D.C. and Maryland chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists and Baltimore Magazine, which named us best political website for a second year in a row.

To help us keep up this good work, please consider giving us a birthday gift by making a tax-deductible contribution to our nonprofit corporation. Donate today to keep us going tomorrow. Thank you.
