Free antivirus software to protect your computer

You may have heard of the recent scare in the last month that threatened to attack several computers and kick thousands of people off the Internet. It didn’t happened but it might some day.  So how safe is your computer from an attack?  Well here I am to help you with what can be a daunting task of finding the right antivirus software.

The following are two free antivirus software programs that I used and tested on my own computer.  I use free antivirus programs because they do the basic things you need to protect your computer – and they offer comparable protection to the programs that can cost more than $100 annually.  But if you do really enjoy the paid program that you use, or would like a little extra protection,  such as spam filters, the free software might not be for you.

Ever since I started using free antivirus software, I have had very little problems with viruses. However,  there is one simple rule that I hope  every computer user follows:  “BE SMART.”  There are many people who are out to do harm to your computer, but with a little common sense you can protect your computer and your data.

The best way to protect your computer is to have  a good antivirus program.  The main thing that I look forward in a antivirus, is that it is easy to use, fast, protects your computer and is not too intrusive to your daily activities.  The last is the most important.  I realize that not everyone has a top-of-the-line computer,   so it is important to pick an antivirus software that does not slow down your computer.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

This antivirus software was by far my favorite.  This is the program that I have been using on my computer for the past three years and when I ran a tech repair business, I would recommend this program to help customers avoid viruses in the future.  It is extremely easy to use. It has  frequent  updates and downloads and installs fast.  Updates are free and by default they automatically download and update in less then a minute on most computers.  PC World reported:

It detected 98.7 percent of the more than 129,000 samples of malware from the past four months in our malware “zoo” test.”

This shows how well AVG is working for you and making sure that your antivirus is up-to-date and making sure that your computer is protected. Download it here.

Panda Cloud Antivirus

This is my second choice because of the simplicity of the way that it was designed.  If I were to recommend an antivirus software to someone  who is not too comfortable with computers and is simply looking for something that will keep their computer safe, then this is for you.  There is a little bit of a trade-off  between AVG and Panda Cloud Antivirus.  The trade off is that Panda Cloud is not as good at stopping day-to-day viruses, but it is easier to use.

Download it here.

Extra:  Still not comfortable with free antivirus software?  Let me help you with this.  Once in a while I will run a program called Spybot Search and Destroy.  This provides extra protection or if you feel that you may have gotten a virus, this will clean out malware from your computer.

Check the antivirus programs out. You won’t be disappointed and you might save yourself a few bucks.
